As much of an arse as Ruby is and can be (remember the French wine boycott because they didn’t support the Iraq War?) he does his steaks right. They are the best I’ve ever had.

I recall eating with my family at the Steakhouse downtown, Ruby was at a table near us. I got up to use the restroom and Ruby had also gotten up and he rudely bumped right into me. I turned around, kinda glared at him and said “Excuse me?” to him in a sarcastic tone, as it was he that should have apologized to me. He just looked through me and walked away. I was one of his patrons, part of a group of 12 people spending $2,000 at his restaurant!

They also tried the old “New Yorking” trick where a server will slip and extra entree onto a big party’s check hoping nobody will notice, as it increases his included gratuity.

We noticed.

Thanks for the recommendation … I had just travelled in from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and enjoyed my first american steak this year!

I haven’t dined at the Waterfront, but I don’t have a problem with the decor at Tropicana, Jeff Ruby’s or the Precinct. JR is known for opulence– and his restaurants are known for it. He’s sort of the anti-Honey, Nectar, Boca, etc– it’s less about the food (though the food is good), but about the experience. And if that works for him (and it obviously does), he should stick with it.

Their steaks are great, but the cheesedick factor at all of restaurants is very annoying. Look at the Waterfront, it’s still Miami Vice 185 in there. Ruby must have loved the high flying ’80′s.
