i'm embarassed to say i cleaned out my kitchen cabinets, fridge, and pantry today and threw away 3 trashbags full of food that was out of date. i don't consider myself a wasteful person, but that really struck me. why did i stockpile? why didn't i donate (before it was out of date)? why do i take food for granted?

thanks for this post.

No problem, Anonymous, though I wish you weren't anonymous. I posted this to inform and promote dialogue. I live in Over-the-Rhine, and find that a lot of the problem in my area (and I cannot speak for the Washington Park area itself as I live a few blocks away) is that though the cans are changed often (2-3x a week on my block), the mess is caused by people rooting through them looking for food and cans. If people are going to look for food in cans anyway-- why not make it easier so that the entire contents aren't strewn all over the place?

I don't even think it's a "make me feel good once in a while" approach. I think it's a smart use for food that would otherwise get thrown away. It's true that we need a holistic approach, but why can't we incorporate eliminating wastefulness?

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers and no simple solution.

While I understand the intent, urban neighborhoods already have a huge problem with litter. In Cincinnati, most of the trash cans are open on top which according to the Replate website means you should just "simply put it next to the trash can, or on a newspaper dispenser". That is simply unacceptable for people living here, and does nothing to solve the root causes of poverty and hunger. The solution has to be bigger than just leaving food out for the poor. This is the attitude that leads people to come to Washington Park and dump bags of clothing out of their cars, or hand out food, all the while there are four soup kitchens and multiple other agencies within blocks that do the same thing. We have to have a holistic approach, not a "make me feel good once and a while" approach. Sorry for the rant, but we need to be smarter in this city about how we deal with these social issues.
