The big news (and a contest!)

by julie on December 16, 2008

So you’re waiting for my big announcement, are you?  I’ve been stopped on the street about this, you know.  “What’s your big announcement?! Can you tell me?!!”

Okay. It wasn’t the street.  It was in my office.  Still.  People wondered! I got asked about it in Big Business Meetings!

To clear a few things up:

1. I am not pregnant.

2. I am not engaged.

3. I am not having a sex change (uh, thanks, TJ Jackson)

4. I’m not going national; not exactly, anyway

5. I have not broken up with The Boyfriend (though I don’t see him nearly as much as I’d like, as we’re so busy!)

OK, so what’s the announcement?

Drumroll, please….

I’m the new food writer for Cincy Chic, Cincinnati’s online magazine for women! I’ll be publishing some of my reviews there, and some original content.  Don’t worry, wine me, dine me isn’t going anywhere– I’ll just be more places at once!

My very first column will be the Bootsy’s, Produced By Jeff Ruby review, which will follow this announcement, so you can see it in both places.

In celebration of my new position with Cincy Chic, I’m sponsoring a contest, the prize generously donated by Oceanaire– a $50 gift certificate.

The contest: In the comments, tell me which restaurants you’d like to see me review!  Pretty simple, right?  I’ll use a randomizer to pick the winner on 12/22/08 at 9 AM, so Oceanaire can get you the certificate before Christmas.  Sound good?  Comment away!

P.S.– try to suggest things I haven’t tried.  If you click on the “Reviews” category, you can see the places I’ve been.  I have a few reviews in my back pocket that you’ll see in the coming weeks!  :)

All of ‘em.

I am really craving trying Tom’s Pot Pies, so I’m gonna say that. And Mokka, cuz I heard they moved again. Just point me in the direction of every new and noteworthy restaurant in town!

oh, and congratulations on the new gig (the things we mean to type and then click on “Post” post haste, before we do.)

Congrats!

I’d like to see reviews of 20 Brix in Old Milford (I’ve never been), and Dingle House in West Chester (killer Reuben Sandwiches).

Oceanaire so I know what to order when I go.

Hmmm…something in Covington? Perhaps, Otto’s.

Congratulations! That is very very exciting. I’d really like to see reviews of Red in Hyde Park and Aqua in Mt. Lookout.

I look forward to seeing you in Cincy Chic!

I second Oceanaire. Also McCormick & Schmick’s, as I’ve never been there either.

HEY! Congrats! I would like a review of the Asiana – Japanese Sushi. It’s on Edwards close to the 71 North on ramp – across the street from those weird “Inns” – hey maybe you could do a review on one of those too (ha ha)

Congrats!

I’d be interested in your review of the Cricket’s menu at The Cincinnatian.

10 Alex December 16, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Major congrats!

Also, I think you should review Myra’s Dionysus in Clifton or Slims in Northside. Mmm…

Congrats! Very, very exciting… as for a restaurant review, I’m pressed…I’ve only been here a year, and I think you’ve reviewed most of the places I’m interested in. Maybe Jo An sushi in Erlanger or the Anchor Grill in Covington if you haven’t already? Two (diametrically opposing) places I have been to and thoroughly enjoyed but would love to hear your thoughts on…

Very exciting news! Congrats!

I’d like to see a series on spots to grab brunch. I <3 brunch!!

Also something on Nuvo in Newport.

13 Katy McGreevey December 16, 2008 at 12:56 pm

That’s wonderful! You’ll get to eat lots of yummies and write about it…wait you already do that! lol just kidding, that’s super cool!

My vote is for my favorite restaurant Kim’s Korean in Harrison. If it has to be a Cincinnati place then I vote for Myra’s Dionysus near UC

You go girl! Congrads. I choose Matsuya, Nuvo, and Chung Ki Wha Korean Barbeque and Sushi Truckstop in that order. the hitch is I want to go along!

Congrats!!

My suggestions:

1. Dingle House (a non-chain in West Chester!!)
2. Primavista (a Cincy classic, but is it any good?)
3. The Winds Cafe (this is a bit of a drive, but SO worth it)

I’m going to suggest Kyoto on Montgomery off Fields-Ertel Road. :)

Congrats….I have read your blogs for several months.
I’ve always wondered about “Knotty Pine on the Bayou”
in Kentucky….I’ve heard good things about it….

Congratulations, Julie. I hope that things go smoothly for you, and that the people who promise to go along on reviews don’t cancel at the last minute :-)

We should have known with that picture of you, 5chw4r7z, and the Cincy Chic ladies at Bootsy’s. Congrats, and keep up the good work!

21 Allison December 16, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Congratulations! Looking forward to that Bootsy’s review. My pick for the review is Maki in Clifton.

Reply

22 Coco December 16, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Congrats :)

I’ve not seen a review for any of the Italian places downtown – Scottis, the place across the alley from Nicholson’s (I never remember it’s name!), and I’ll second the weekend brunch – it’s a hard thing to find in Cincy ;)

Reply

23 Rose December 16, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Congratulations, dear. You’ll rock the mag, I know it!

Review suggestion: Through the Garden, in Blue Ash on Kenwood Road and Creek.

:-)

not a sex change.

I’d go with Knotty Pine on the Bayou down on the AA in Northern Kentucky. I didn’t see it in the reviews, and its my favorite restaurant in town.

2nd place – Bistro JeanRo – especially their steak frit…wow…

27 Erin December 16, 2008 at 7:07 pm

I’d love to see Otto’s and Honey!

28 Jennifer McClur December 16, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Congratulations Julie! I’d like to see a review of Mesh in West Chester. I’ve been there, but would be interested to see your review.

Reply

29 TJ Jackson December 16, 2008 at 11:24 pm

I’d like to see your take on any of the following
1) the breakfast at Tucker’s
2) an overview piece on good eats (actual eats versus ‘grocery’ items) at Findlay market
3) an overview piece contrasting/comparing the many Indian eateries in Clifton, particularly the set on Ludlow
4) an expose on how it came to be that Jimmy Gibson is no longer with the Ruby Group

and c’mon now, the sex change thing was just a joke :-)

30 Kevin Dugan December 17, 2008 at 12:25 am

Awesome news. Congratulations! As for the restaurant to review, I say go back to your roots. Pick something West. Primavista is an obvious choice. But there are more, uh, informal options too. :-)

From there, anything Indian.

Reply

31 Kathryn Whittington December 17, 2008 at 5:44 am

You deserrve it! I would like to see Primavista too–we used to go there years ago but haven’t been in a while. I would also like to have you review the ” downscale ” side of eating–so what is the best you can do at fast food places to get a decent meal? Last, there is a mediterranean restaurant in Blue Ash that opened about 6 months ago–can’t remember it’s name–but it is getting popular.

32 valereee December 17, 2008 at 7:29 am

Congratulations! Review local independents, not chains. But you knew I’d say that. :D

Reply

33 Kayla December 17, 2008 at 8:04 am

Review someplace that I can afford!! I don’t mean take out or a lunch-ish place, but someplace that you can have a decent dinner and not spend a fortune.

34 Lauren D. December 17, 2008 at 10:52 am

Julie, congrats on the new gig!

I’m going to second the nomination for Knotty Pine on the Bayou. Andy’s Mediterranean. The new Rookwood restaurant in Mt. Adams. Beluga and/or The Vineyard in Hyde Park. And any pizza place you can find!

35 Mikki December 17, 2008 at 11:42 am

Has anyone recommended fast(er) food type places? I would love to see a comparison of all these Chipotle/ Panera type places. Since I have kids, when we go out it is usually to one of these lower end places. I would love to here about them from a foodie perspective. I would like to know where I can get a GOOD quick meal!

Reply

36 Mikki December 17, 2008 at 11:44 am

Oh! Congrats on the new gig – no one deserves it more than you! (forgive all the typos in the previous post – sick today :( )

Reply

37 Kate December 17, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I don’t know if you’ve been to Emanu in Pleasant Ridge.

I think a big group would be a good way for you to experience Slims properly (stand by: plans on the horizon for that in Jan…)

And I think Asiana in HP/Oakley/Norwood convergence deserves a review.

And all of those spots are BYOB! Any other good BYOB places in Cincinnati? Times are tight – I love cutting corners anywhere I can ;)

OH! Julie, add Korean Riverside because we love it in winter, Otto’s because it’s our current fave and the staff is so great and Rio Grande in Newport because I am craving Mex.

I would like to see a review of either Song long or Nectar in Mt Lookout. Song long is great, but still havent been to Nectar. Also Jaspers turned to Redmoor and is still doing food and party services. Could be a good time of year to do this.

43 Charles December 20, 2008 at 11:00 am

Congratulations!

OK, I’m going to:
-Add “Knotty Pine on the Bayou,” even if they put tomatoes in their red beans and rice (almost as wrong as when Red Fish put cheese on it)
-Allyn’s Cafe on Columbia Parkway
-The Yellow Rose of Texas (’cause I want someone else to try it before I do)

Big, big congrats! You have so many great suggestions already, but I went with two very different Asian restaurants in northern Kentucky: the venerable Oriental Wok in Lakeside Park and the fairly new Mai Thai in Florence.

45 Steve December 20, 2008 at 11:39 am

How about Noce’s Pizza on North Bend? The closest thing to a New York slice I’ve found.

Reply

46 goesoutalot December 21, 2008 at 4:12 pm

For lunch I’d like to see a review of Hathaways in Carew Tower.
For Dinner, I too have heard good and bad on Knotty Pine on the Bayou. And also another place I’ve heard good and bad: John Phillips at Crestview.

47 Shannon Offerman December 22, 2008 at 9:33 am

Congrats, Julie! Very exciting. My suggestions are Kyoto sushi off Fields-Ertel, Honey in Northside, and Thai Cafe in Clifton. I look forward to reading more…yum!

I’d like to see you review Noce’s Pizzeria in Cheviot, the best pizza in Cincinnati in my opinion…
