Review: Quaker True Delights

by julie on February 13, 2009

Foodbuzz sent me some more samples– this time?  Quaker Oats True Delights.  Now, I’m not usually one to review prepackaged food, but I’m a huge fan of granola bars.  They’re a quick breakfast for me when I’m running out the door, or a decently good-for-me snack in midafternoon.

Before I had these, my favorite granola bar was Kashi’s Dark Chocolate Cherry.  Hey, I like my granola bars to at least tease me with sinfulness.  I want that sin at 180 calories or less.  These? 140.  Awesome.

The flavors are pretty good– my favorite is the one pictured,  Honey Roasted Cashew Mixed Berry (I’ve since bought two more boxes. I REALLY like them).  It’s fruity, with a very prominent honey note, and just a bit of salty cashew contrast. I also liked the Dark Chocolate Raspberry Almond (three of my favorite dessert flavors, naturally).  The third flavor is my least favorite, Toasted Coconut Banana Macadamia, had little coconut flavor and a lot of banana flavor.  I tend to only like whole bananas, or whole ones that are incorporated into a dessert, and not banana flavor– whether naturally or artificially based.  Macadamias aren’t a real favorite, either, so I won’t purchas those.

Since I am, theoretically, a Cincinnati Loser, occasionally I have to eat something healthy.  These are a great, low calorie, slightly indulgent breakfast or snack.

Ditto on the toasted coconut banana…I really only like actual bananas, but let Justin talk me into these in a moment of weakness. I feel I have to compromise when he actually comes to the store and helps carry in the groceries.

I will give your first flavor a shot–my current fave (at least since October) is the Kashi Pumpkin Flax Spice granola bar. Good on its own, good in yogurt.

make sure you check out the ingredients.

you would think quaker would steer clear of the artificials – nope.

lookout for the words ‘Hydrogenated soybean oil’. it’s in there.

and it’s one molecule away from plastic.

    sick.

I am a huge fan of granola bars too and I am always looking for something new. I will have to pick these up sometime! Another good brand that I like is the South Beach Diet High Protein bars. The peanut butter granola bars are pretty good and fill you up! It is great for breakfast.

I like the Kashi Chocolate Cherry and the Pumpkin/Flax granola bars. My current favorites have been the FiberOne bars — not sure of the caloric intake, but they are delicious!

I was looking at those in the grocery store just the other day – they sure look appealing, but I need something with more protein if I’m going to use it as a breakfast replacement. Maybe if they go on sale, I’ll try them as a snack.

I love these but haven’t purchased in awhile and now I can’t find them in the store.  Do you happen to know if they are still available in Cincy?  If not, any recos on replacement options?  Thanks!!

According to the website, they’re still available. I’ll check at the grocery when I go tonight.
