(This was originally published in Cincy Chic. As much as I don’t believe that chain restaurants should be eligible for Best Damn Dish at Taste of Cincinnati, I had to admit they have a pretty nice Valentine’s special.)
Whether you’re single in the ciy, or cuddling with your honey, Valentine’s Day is upon us. Want some suggestions on where to eat—whether you’re with your girlfriends or with your latest date? Here are wine me, dine me’s picks for a great night.
Valentine’s day is considered an “amateur night”—a night where people who don’t normally eat out pack restaurants in the hopes of impressing their significant other. A tip? Go out the night before. You can have a great experience, but avoid the crowds. Still going out? Try these best bets!
Valentine’s With a View: Primavista (Price Hill), the Celestial (Mt. Adams) and Via Vite (Downtown) all have beautiful views. Primavista has the best view of Cincinnati in a location you don’t expect, along with some great Italian food. The Celestial has cozy banquettes that overlook the sparkling Ohio River. Via Vite lets you watch the goings-on of Fountain Square, with some trendy surroundings and modern Italian food.
First Date Valentine’s: Head over to Mariemont and the Quarter Bistro for a red-infused valentine’s dinner. Try out their steak frites and scallops, and Valentine’s-red sangria—if your date doesn’t work out, the food and atmosphere will more than make up for it.
Valentine’s with Girlfriends: Grab your besties and head out for a night on the town—you don’t have to be part of a couple to have a good time. Why not go to a wine bar, like 20 Brixx in Milford, or Bouquet in Covington, and enjoy wine, cheese, small plates and a laid-back atmosphere, where you can reconnect with your friends instead of going to a club? Split a bottle of bubbly (or your favorite wine) and enjoy your time together.
Valentine’s Day at Home: Why not swing by the new Kenwood Kroger, which features chef-created entrees, appetizers and desserts. Pick up a bottle of wine, some cheese from their Murray’s cheese shop (the only one outside of New York!) and have an easy date at home with no effort—so more time to hang out with your SO (or just yourself). Pop in a movie (how about Bottle Shock or No Reservations, to hold onto my wine me, dine me theme) and enjoy an evening at home.
Early Valentine’s: Carrabba’s is featuring an early-in-the-week Valentine’s deal. The Dal Cuore Nights celebration includes a Prix Fixe Menu (Less than $20 per person) and $10 off any bottle of wine, including Ruffino’s Dal Cuore di Carrabba wine, a limited-edition baby Super Tuscan created exclusively for Carrabbas. Carrabbas recently won ‘Best Damn Dish” for their Chicken Bryan at the 2008 Taste of Cincinnati.
Cheap Valentines: You know, I kind of like the idea of a romantic meal at White Castle. I think it’s pretty creative that they’ve placed their tongue firmly in their cheek and gone the candles, red roses, and Slyders route. Call up your local White Castle for a reservation. It’s the Recessionista version of V-day!

Some Skylines also do the “tongue in cheek” Valentines dinner with tablecloths, candles, and tuxedo clad waiters!
There’s an absolutely uncontrollable (and by no means complete) list of dinner specials on my Cincy Wine Events Calendar this week: http://www.wine-girl.net/cincywineevents.html. It’s a little crazy. Many of the specials start this Tuesday and run through Sunday. Valentine’s every day of the week, I suppose.

Definitely why my BF and I went out this past Saturday for our Valentine’s dinner. Yes, it was a Saturday night, but the Chart House wasn’t packed, we got a table by the window, and the wait staff (and kitchen) wasn’t overworked.
We never, NEVER go out on VDay, it’s amateur night indeed.
Thanks for the great restaurant suggestions as well as a girlfriend Valentine’s Day celebration! Happy <3 Day!

I still want to see the new Kroger…the parking situation there is such a disaster that it has put me off. I’m a die hard fan of Fresh Market, but willing to see what the competition has to offer.

Some confusion about the list on the wine-girl’s site…the marble hill chocolate shop is closed, isn’t it? But it is listed as having an event…

Hmm, I’m sure if you point that out to her she’ll correct it. Odd.
Yeah, the parking does kind of suck at the new Kroger. Try at a slightly off hour– Saturdays and any time between 4-7 on weekdays are not so great.

or pizza. There’s dewey’s close to my place and we’re thinking about having that on v-day. nothing better than the smell of roasted garlic on SO’s breath when sparks are about to fly.
Can you tell that this holiday is overrated for me?

we whole heartedly agree that Valentine’s day is amateur night. That is why we go to white castle on valentine’s day. You can’t beat it! This year our Valentine’s day present will be our final trip to Pigalls the tuesday after.
Even being a guy I thought you might like a couple of ideas I could share with you for your night out. I was born in Cincy and have owned two restaurants in the past along with winning a couple of Wine Spectator awards for wine cellars we built and stocked.
(1) Do not go out on Valentine’s Day to a popular restaurant or one that will draw a crowd on that evening. You are just asking to be disappointed as the restaurant is being taxed to do the impossible. They are trying to serve one of the largest crowds of the year and to be perfect in service and food preparation at the same time. In most cases this is not going to happen.
(2) Do go on another night. Especially for Valentine’s Day 2010 as this will be on a Sunday night. Celebrate earlier on Friday or Saturday. If you go on Monday you are just going to get a special which is a remake of Sunday night’s leftovers.
(3) Many states now allow you to take in your own bottle of wine. Do so and save a bundle even if you pay a corking fee (usually $3-$5) to have your bottle opened for you. Most restaurants mark their wine up 3-4 times their cost. While their cost is lower than what you pay for the same wine in a liquor store once they mark it up 3-4 times you are paying much more that what you would in a liquor store.
(4) Because they know you can price compare with the liquor store many restaurants simply buy wines that are not stocked in your local store or they buy all of the wine that the distributor has for that state in that year. Then they mark it up however they want without you knowing or being able to compare prices.
(5) Do have fun but keep these things in mind as you make your plans for Valentine’s Day 2010 and here is a lot of love to all of you gals out there. Enjoy your celebrations.

A lot of my friends are spending less on Valentine’s Day this year. I am guessing that there will be enormous pent up desire to splurge on one’s Valentine when we get past this recession!
