My wife is from Japan, so we do kind of a Japanese twist on Valentine's Day. In Japan, the custom is for women to give chocolate to men on Valentine's Day (unsurprisingly, this custom was started by a chocolate company), so my wife always gets me some kind of really gourmet chocolate. Other than that, we usually have a nice dinner at home with either champagne or a bottle of Torres' San Valentin red.

A lot of my friends are spending less on Valentine's Day this year. I am guessing that there will be enormous pent up desire to splurge on one's Valentine when we get past this recession!

Even being a guy I thought you might like a couple of ideas I could share with you for your night out. I was born in Cincy and have owned two restaurants in the past along with winning a couple of Wine Spectator awards for wine cellars we built and stocked.

(1) Do not go out on Valentine's Day to a popular restaurant or one that will draw a crowd on that evening. You are just asking to be disappointed as the restaurant is being taxed to do the impossible. They are trying to serve one of the largest crowds of the year and to be perfect in service and food preparation at the same time. In most cases this is not going to happen.

(2) Do go on another night. Especially for Valentine's Day 2010 as this will be on a Sunday night. Celebrate earlier on Friday or Saturday. If you go on Monday you are just going to get a special which is a remake of Sunday night's leftovers.

(3) Many states now allow you to take in your own bottle of wine. Do so and save a bundle even if you pay a corking fee (usually $3-$5) to have your bottle opened for you. Most restaurants mark their wine up 3-4 times their cost. While their cost is lower than what you pay for the same wine in a liquor store once they mark it up 3-4 times you are paying much more that what you would in a liquor store.

(4) Because they know you can price compare with the liquor store many restaurants simply buy wines that are not stocked in your local store or they buy all of the wine that the distributor has for that state in that year. Then they mark it up however they want without you knowing or being able to compare prices.

(5) Do have fun but keep these things in mind as you make your plans for Valentine's Day 2010 and here is a lot of love to all of you gals out there. Enjoy your celebrations.

or pizza. There's dewey's close to my place and we're thinking about having that on v-day. nothing better than the smell of roasted garlic on SO's breath when sparks are about to fly.

Can you tell that this holiday is overrated for me?

Hmm, I'm sure if you point that out to her she'll correct it. Odd.

Yeah, the parking does kind of suck at the new Kroger. Try at a slightly off hour-- Saturdays and any time between 4-7 on weekdays are not so great.
