According to a Twitter source (I love Twitter), The Phoenix is now closed for business.
Very sad– I went there with my prom date Junior year of high school. It was originally a Jewish men’s club (as the social clubs in the city did not allow Jews to be members) and eventually turned into a restaurant and reception hall. I was there most recently for the Bacchanalian Society– very sad to see it go.
In calling this evening, I got a machine and not the restaurant– will follow up with more news as I get it.
ETA: According to Polly Campbell, this is just the restaurant and not the banquet hall. That’s good news, anyway. Weddings at the Phoenix are lovely.

Yea, it’s sad, real bartenders and a glorious space.
I’ve only been to two banquets and a wedding reception there. The banquets were okay food-wise, but the wedding reception was just plain odd. There were three stations that you went to for your food: a made to order pasta station that backed up immediately and was at least a 30 minute wait, a carving station with ham & roast beef, and a top-your-own potato station with mashed white or sweet potatoes. The only vegetable (besides the potatoes) was a small bowl of corn on the potato table. We left before the cake was served and got food elsewhere. I realize the bride (and/or her family) probably made the food choices, but it still made me never want to go back to the Phoenix.
