Jean-Robert’s new restaurant…

May 13, 2009

…will be in Northside! WLWT reports that a bistro concept will open in Northside soon, apparently in the old American Can Company (thanks to @geekjames for filling me in– I’m traveling this week and pretty far away from local news!). So what do you think he’ll do? Speculate away. No Martin Wade comments in the [...]

Review: Molly Malone’s

May 13, 2009

I used to love the Dubliner.  Great food, great atmosphere, great beer list and general good time.  I was sad when, a few years ago, they closed.  I had the same reaction to Jack Quinn’s closing in Covington. I liked both restaurants because they reflected not only pseudo-Irish culture, but also real English specialties.  Curries, [...]

Review: Village Ice Cream Parlor, Lebanon

May 12, 2009

Is it wrong of me to love Lebanon, Ohio just for this little place? An old fashioned ice cream shop, serving Hershey’s Ice Cream– it reminds me of Graeter’s in Western Hills (the tiny parlor that was behind McAlpin’s) when I was a kid– metal cups, heart-shaped wire chairs, little rickety tables, and kind older [...]

Mini Re-Review: La Mexicana Birria Tacos

May 11, 2009

Yum. I ate goat for dinner on Friday night. Several of you recommended I try the birria, or goat, tacos the next time I headed to La Mexicana. I’m glad I did– it was very good! It was prepared with guajillo sauce, onion, cilantro, and lime and tasted… well, like beef. Yum. Highly recommended!

Review: Rio Grande, Newport

May 11, 2009

I am always on the hunt for good Mexican food.  Terry, in particular, loves his margaritas and chips and salsa.  When our friends Lile and April suggested we head south-of-the-border (har har) to their favorite Mexican place, Rio Grande in the Newport Shopping Center, we braved the river (hyperbole: I grocery shop in Kentucky half [...]

Mini-Review: Shadeau Breads

May 8, 2009

I might have the best boyfriend in the world. On Saturday mornings, when our calendars are both scheduled, Terry will run over to Shadeau Breads and pick up breakfast while I’m still asleep.  I wake up to coffee and croissants– it’s like we’re in Paris, except with cats. They’re not quite des Gateaux et de [...]

Mini-Review: Via Vite and the Mercantile Library

May 7, 2009

Via Vite was kind enough to cater the Mercantile Library’s presentation of a reading of The United States of Arugula by David Kamp a few weeks ago, so I got to try their delicious spreads and dips (that I never get when I actually go there): (His Julia Child impression is hysterical) They sent over [...]

Closing: The Phoenix

May 6, 2009

According to a Twitter source (I love Twitter), The Phoenix is now closed for business. Very sad– I went there with my prom date Junior year of high school. It was originally a Jewish men’s club (as the social clubs in the city did not allow Jews to be members) and eventually turned into a [...]

Mini-Review: Tucker’s

May 6, 2009

It’s not a huge secret that I seem to be at Tucker’s every Sunday morning.  Terry still always gets the shrimp and grits, but I’ve experimented a bit.  My favorite so far? Well, besides the shrimp and grits, that is.  Fresh fruit, delicious brioche, butter– all it needs is real maple syrup (they use something [...]
