The Happy Mouth Supper Club journeyed to Glendale for the Cock and Bull a couple of weeks ago. Jay, a big fan of the pub environment, chose the spot, and chose well. The name sounds familiar because it is the sister restaurant of the Cock and Bull in Covington– a great place to sit outside and sip a beer, but I’d never had their food.
There were about ten of us, and we started off with beer. I chose a Guinness 250th Anniversary stout, which was… surprisingly good! I love regular Guinness, and I describe this as a summer Guinness- lighter, less head, a bit more bitter, and good for sipping on a hot summer’s day. There’s a lot less of that chocolate and coffee overtone, so it would pair well with lighter dishes. Not that I got a lighter dish.
Terry and I both went for burgers– he chose the Bull Burger, which is a classic burger with the usual trimmings, with cajun mayonnaise on the side. He ordered it medium, and medium it was– cooked to order, good toppings, and the cajun mayonnaise was a nice touch (though not terribly British).
I ended up with the 3B Burger– Bacon, Balsamic and Blue cheese. This was a really fun pick– bacon is always good, of course, but I love sweet, acidic balsamic with sharp, creamy blue cheese. Especially on a burger that was cooked to a nice medium rare. I only ate half– but man, was it tasty!
I got the cole slaw– which was nice, but not remarkable. Terry got fries that were okay, but nothing special. Again, the focus is on the burger, not on the sides.
I liked the atmosphere, but the upstairs band was a bit too loud for ten people to converse, so a couple of us moved downstairs for more beer. I don’t get out to Glendale often, but this seemed to be a nice, “neighborhood bar” sort of setting that happens to have good food– they really do the pub scene right.
