To Erin- If you want to see the 'old Echo,' visit any time other than Sunday mornings...it is still mostly populated with people 60+ and regulars who come in every day. Chances are, if you can make it for breakfast during the week, you'll receive better service and not have to wait in line at the door.

Pretentiousness at the Echo can sometimes be found in the clientele, I guess, but that's the kind of thing that happens in Hyde Park. Even more scary than that, since word has gotten out, I'm already noticing snobs at Terry's TurfClub.

I think I ate there the first time ten years ago, and it was grandma-ville... and good. This time it was good, but not people I want to hang out with on a Sunday morning.

I miss the old Echo, when it used to be regarded as an old person restaurant. When the doors closed at 7:45 pm - they meant it. Now it's so pretentious. I don't even consider the Echo anymore.

My first choice for breakfast is Chili Time in St. Bernard on Vine St. Great place and very consistent. My neighborhood breakfast joints are too unreliable: both Proud Rooster & Olives. Olives - really, how many times does it take you do a correct sunny side up egg? 3, 4, maybe never. CHILI TIME every time.

Most importantly, I discovered recently (how could I have missed it?) that they serve liquor and make a nice Bloody Mary - a must with hangover and eggs.

Read up on it (thanks again Wikipedia!) and love that it's another of those German dishes that was brought over and turned into local fare. I've heard of scrapple (never have - uh - had the opportunity to enjoy any) but I get the notion of meat that is cut with grain to stretch it out longer. Basically a sausage meatloaf with steel-cut oats as the filler.

Of course, I love pork, and I love steel-cut oats, so I'm betting I'd be all over Goetta!

I'll have to try it for breakfast sometime. Randy, if you like sausage, then I definitely recommend trying goetta sometime. Went The Echo for dinner and wasn't really impressed. Lots of better options for dinner in that area, in my opinion.

Yes, my friends & I fall into the category of "over-sized sunglasses, hung over from a party." We frequently drag our tired selves there after a night in Mt. Lookout and it never disappoints... except the line of people waiting in a vulture-like manner-- you have to prey on nearly finished tables to get a spot. Our favs are the omelets.

Yup, goetta is a mix of pork, pinhead oats, and spices. It's similar to scrapple, if you're familiar with that. Every region (at least east of the Mississippi) seems to have a version of this sausage-like concoction.
