Wow, last Friday’s recipe was timely– Sheila Lukins, who co-authored The Silver Palate Cookbook (with Julee Rosso) 27 years ago, died on Sunday. The Silver Palate, as I mentioned in my Chicken Marbella recipe post, was the cookbook that introduced many Americans, and in particular, working American women, to what we now think of modern gourmet ingredients, like balsamic vinegar, capers, Mediterranean ingredients, and other now commonplace ingredients. The New Basics, their followup cookbook, is considered a classic right next to The Joy of Cooking. Ed Levine writes an excellent tribute to Lukins in Serious Eats.
If you haven’t, pick up a copy of Silver Palate– it’s a great read, with great recipes and interesting tidbits of food information.
