Gourmet Magazine Folds

by julie on October 6, 2009

Gourmet Magazine, the “granddaddy” of all food magazines (and the magazine that recently featured Cincinnati’s own Tucker’s) is going out of business.  According to Time Magazine, their content will be rolled into Epicurious.com, at least in part.

Pretty sad– they just released their new cookbook, Gourmet Today as a companion to their already-famous  Big Yellow Book. I always loved reading the magazine, and gazing longingly at the pictures and tablesettings.

I subscribe to Saveur and Bon Appetit, but not Gourmet– not sure why, I like it quite a bit and have a stack of back issues.  Do you subscribe to magazines?  Have recipe blogs changed the way you approach your cooking needs?  Are average people more likely to get recipes off of the web than through magazines or cookbooks?

I used to subscribe to tons of magazines, including food magazines (Vegetarian Times, Gourmet, Cooking Light, etc.); however, I've cut way back on the magazines I subscribe to over the last several years. One, I don't read them like I used to…sometimes they just sit in their plastic wrapper for months before they're opened. Two, I've tried to cut back on magazine subscriptions due to the expense (especially in light of reason one.)

As for recipes, I do use online searches or websites to find what I'm looking for (in addition to traditional cookbooks.) I tend to use Allrecipes.com, Epicurious.com, and Foodnetwork.com. I also use both the Allrecipes and Epicurious iPhone apps. They are especially handy when I am grocery shopping.

I am so sad! I have to admit that I do not subscribe to the magazine either because I can always read it at the doctors office if someone doesn't leave it on the aircraft. I get great inspiration from a lot of cooking magazines and would rather have it in paper form for when I cannot go online. As far as online is concerned, I love it too. When I bring home a new food or simply want a different way to prepare a familar food, I simply go online. Hopefully, the online form will offer some of the things we love about the magazine.
