Groupon is entering Cincinnati!

Groupon is finally entering the Cincinnati market (it’s been quite successful in Columbus). Groupon is a way to use the power of the collective to get good deals on things in Cincinnati– and restaurants are often businesses that love Groupon! In other cities, Groupons have featured:

$5 for $10 worth of sandwiches at a Columbus deli
$5 for $15 worth of pastries at a Columbus bakery
$10 for $20 worth of pizza…

You get the idea. It’s kind of like restaurant.com, but also features other sorts of local businesses.

What they do (according to their website):

1. Each day we feature something cool to do at an unbeatable price.
2. You only get it if enough people join that day… so invite your friends!
3. Check back the next day for another awesome Groupon!

    I’m a huge fan of Groupon, but the whole “power of the collective” is just a marketing angle. That’s not quite how it works.

    In reality, the “power of the collective” means that the retailer/restaurant has a minimum buy agreement with Groupon. Invoking the “you only get the deal if you invite lots of people” yarn is just a way to reduce customer acquisition costs. I’ve certainly shared deals via Groupon, but only if I genuinely thought the person I was sharing with was extremely likely to make the purchase.

    As a marketer, I’m pretty sensitive about how much consumers buy into taglines and marketing hooks, so apologies if this comment has a negative tone. Like I said, I love Groupon and have spent hundreds of dollars through them since they launched (mostly in NYC, but I just nabbed a dental exam, cleaning, and x-rays for $59 in SF). I just want to make sure people don’t spam their friends out of a misguided notion that it’s going to help them get a bargain.

    Good to hear they are headed our way…and the clarification from Jackie is also helpful. We’re planning on having them involved in a future Cincinnati Social Media event as I think it would be worth learning more about them in that context. Thanks!

    The groupon coupon for today is for a cookie up in the burbs but they also sell at findlay market on the weekends. If you have not tried there cookies I highly recommend them at the 50% of the normal price :)

    Does anyone have any experience with being a featured merchant on Groupon? I’m curious as to how long it takes to get a response once you submit the request to be featured. Does everyone get featured? Is there some sort of hierarchy? I.E. if Groupon stands to make more off of one merchant, will that merchant become featured? Since there is only room for one featured merchant per day, that’s only 365 clients per year. What if more than that apply to become featured?
    I have a ton of clients that I’d love to get featured on Groupon but I’m not sure I will even get them on the site. Anyone have an experience to share?
