Congrats! But you should have bought a Canon. ;) Anyway, if you shoot RAW, that will help a LOT in terms of being able to make corrections where needed (a must for low-light like in restaurants.) For stuff at home, try side-lighting if you can. Ruhlman's blog has some good stuff up about food photography lately. Though I'm not thrilled by that photographer's style, her tips are solid.
