Review: Frieda’s Bakery

March 18, 2010

My grandmother was an excellent baker, in a very traditional German style, which has made me, I think, a bit particular about my baked goods. In addition, growing up, there were always great bakeries in my neighborhood, where if Grandma didn’t feel like baking, we could get some excellent stuff. Now, with our annual European [...]

Hideaway: Closed

March 18, 2010

A Twitter conversation reminded me that I forgot to post about this: Hideaway in Northside is closed. I had done brunch there (as part of the Northside Brunch Tour), and wasn’t impressed– my French toast was undercooked, for example– so when I heard they were closed, I wasn’t surprised. I always loved their Cuban and [...]

So what’s going on at Slims?

March 16, 2010

I’ve been asked this question several times– what’s up at Slims? Have you read their blog? It looks like they’re still doing their thing– 5:30-when the food is gone, Friday and Saturday, prix fixe. They’ve added a new service, which they call VOUT. They’ll serve Puerto Rican and Cuban food, at a la carte prices, [...]

Recipe: Sloppy Joes

March 16, 2010

According to The Boyfriend, I was a deprived child. I never ate Spaghetti-Os, Chef Boyardee, boxed macaroni and cheese or Manwich.  I didn’t do chicken pot pie, Aunt Jemima pancakes or peanut butter and jelly swirled together in a jar.  I definitely didn’t eat sugary kids’ cereals.  Okay, maybe I was kind of a boring [...]

Guy Fieri in town– where is he?

March 15, 2010

As you may know, Guy Fieri is in town– I’ve known he was coming for a while, since his production company contacted me nearly a year ago.  Television research takes a while!  I gave them a few suggestions, but sadly– no chance to meet the Guy himself.  That’s okay– he’s giving props to some of [...]

L’Auberge Names New Chef; Whalen moves to Kenwood Country Club

March 15, 2010

Ah, the revolving door that is L’Auberge. So Romy Jung left last year, and Jared Whalen was named chef on August 15. Now, eight months later, it looks like there’s yet another chef, according to the Dayton Business Journal. David Lease will be taking the reins, in the kitchen that he started his career in [...]

Review: Meadow Lark, Dayton

March 15, 2010

Restaurant Week in Dayton just came and went, and I managed to get up there to try one restaurant– Meadow Lark. It’s sandwiched in a strip mall near the Dayton Mall, and easy to miss if you don’t pay attention.  We went on Friday of Restaurant Week with two friends from Dayton– and it was [...]

More sushi downtown: Soho Sushi

March 12, 2010

I complained for the longest time about no sushi available downtown.  Sheesh.  Ask and ye shall receive… in the old Margarita’s spot on 4th street, you’ll soon find Soho Sushi, which, as reported by Ms5chw4r7z, will be opening soon. (Thanks to EM for the tip and the TwitPic!)

Cocktail Hour: The Aviation

March 12, 2010

Does it feel like Friday to you? I’ve been looking forward to Friday– and Friday night– all week. And Friday nights, for me, mean cocktail time! Not to tread on Wine Girl’s domain, but she’s pretty busy with the Wine Festival this weekend, so I thought I’d throw in a post about one of my [...]

Taft with a Twist: Dutch Treats

March 11, 2010

Right now, the Taft Museum is featuring the  Dutch Masters– you know, like Rembrandt– and folks you might not be as familiar with in an exhibit called Dutch Utopia.  They’ve been doing some events for the YP community– and they asked me to “host” an event.  I’ll be presenting some chocolate history and wine pairings [...]
