It’s Opening Day!

DSCN2417Yay, it’s Opening Day! Longtime readers might know that we here at wine me, dine me are big baseball fans, though we also really like going to ballparks and sampling– what else?– the food.  Sadly, our own hometown team’s ballpark has  some of the worst food we’ve had at a ballpark.  Both the minor league teams nearby, the Florence Freedom and the Dayton Dragons  have much better food.  We visited the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals  last year, and I made it to a Florida Marlins game.  The Marlins’ hot dogs (there weren’t many choices) were much better than your standard Kahn’s hot dog, and the Pirates’ food was pretty spectacular.  We’re going to try to see a White Sox and an Indians game this  year, and I have designs on a Boston Red Sox game, if I could make sure that Terry would speak to me again if I went.

So anyway, some good news — according to this article, the food is supposed to be upgraded this year!  The bar is low, so I’m not sure how much of an improvement this will be, but hey, I’m willing to try.  They’re adding Queen City Sausages to the menu, and sushi rolls from Sake Bomb.  The sushi will be sold in a “grab and go” format at a UDF-branded Reds Market.  I am rather pleased that GABP has a lot of local vendors– LaRosa’s, Skyline (which is premiering its Walking 3-Way this year), Penn Station, UDF, Kahn’s (as bad as those hot dogs are…) and now Sake Bomb and Queen City Sausage.  Don’t forget you can also buy fresh produce at the Findlay Market stand, too!

So yes, we’ll report back with our White Sox and Indians adventures, and of course, weigh in on the new food at GABP.  For now– play ball!

Not only do they have lackluster food at GABP, the service is uniformly awful to the point of hair pulling frustration.

We generally sit in the 400s– since there’s no one there, the service is usually quick. There’s also not a lot of choice up there…

You’ve had better luck than me in the upper deck. My belief is that since most of the people working the concessions are volunteers raising money for their groups the food choices have to be dumbed down to accommodate the transient work force. It also explains why I also seem to get the cashier who struggles to work the cash register.

Of COURSE, I’ll speak to you again, Sweetie, if you go to Fenway without me.

It’ll just take a few years for it to happen.
