Cocktail Hour: Sidecar

May 28, 2010

I didn’t think I’d like the sidecar.  I don’t like cognac.  I remember stealing sips of my mom’s bottle– in a decanter that cork had fallen into– and thinking it was the most noxious thing ever.  Fast forward, oh, 20 years and in reading about the sidecar, I decided to put my prejudice aside and [...]

New (sort of) Food Truck: Gold Star Chilimobile

May 28, 2010

It looks like Gold Star has joined the food truck bandwagon. Their new Chilimobile will premiere at the Q102 Outdoor Concert Series on June 2, and each Wednesday for the rest of the summer. They’ll also be doing “lunch runs” throughout the city. If you want to know where they are, follow them on Twitter [...]

Review: Vout

May 27, 2010

Vout, as I reported a couple of months ago, is the new concept available during the week for the well-established Slims, which specializes in locally-grown food (grown by owner Patrick McCafferty) with a Latin twist.  Vout takes Slims’ weekend menu, makes it a bit more casual– and a la carte. I went there a couple [...]

Soho Sushi now open downtown

May 26, 2010

Soho Sushi– a build-your-own-sushi restaurant– is open for lunch downtown, 11-3. They’re located in Tower Place, but they do have a separate, non-mall entrance on 4th Street. They are currently not open for dinner (which means I probably won’t get there anytime soon).

Coupons, coupons…

May 25, 2010

I really hate coupons.  I lose them. I forget about them.  I rarely (if ever) use them.  I know, I’m very behind in the whole coupon thing, considering what savings divas my LOL compadres are.  I am, however, totally into the idea of virtual coupons.  You know, for things I actually use (restaurants, fresh fruits [...]

Cocktail Hour: Sazerac

May 21, 2010

This post is kind of inspired by my friend and coworker, Vic, who is a displaced New Orleanian. We were in Houston together a few months ago, and had dinner. Houston is filled with displaced New Orleanians, and our excellent waiter was one of them. Vic asked if they made a Sazerac– our waiter said [...]

Cocktail Extra: Equipment

May 20, 2010

Okay, so liquor is kind of expensive. I really ought to stop collecting it for a little while, as it is taking over my bar, and I’m sure my bank thinks I’m an alcoholic (what with all of the Party Source and Cork ‘n’ Bottle purchases I’ve made recently). The stuff you use to MAKE [...]

Review: Cafe de Wheels

May 19, 2010

Cafe de Wheels is the grandaddy of food trucks here in Cincinnati– it’s probably the best-known and certainly the most established.  They, like yesterday’s Senor Roy’s, use Twitter and Facebook to communicate their locations.  They have a few regular hang-outs: the School for the Creative and Performing Arts, outside of Fries Cafe, outside of Below [...]

Review: Senor Roy’s Taco Patrol

May 18, 2010

Finally, I’ve managed to catch up with the roving band of trucks serving up all sorts of delicious things around the city. And I do mean around the city– rarely do they venture outside the confines of Clifton, Over-the-Rhine or the Central Business District.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve discovered Cafe de [...]

What do you want to see at Cincinnati’s Restaurant Row?

May 17, 2010

Have you heard about Cincinnati’s Restaurant Row? This is the area on 6th and Walnut– think the old Oceanaire location, Mr. Sushi– on the ground floor of the 580 Building. The building has several spots open for restaurants (see the artist’s rendering to the left). I spoke with Kathleen Norris from Brandt Retail Group, who [...]
