Review: Riverside BBQ and Drive Thru

January 31, 2011

There’s one thing that, to me, says “West Side” more than Elder football, Hudy Delight, and the half-hour drive it takes to get anywhere over there: drive throughs. Excuse me, drive thru. I remember my dad going through the drive thru on Delhi Pike to pick up soda (he wasn’t a beer drinker), though they [...]

Friday Five: Barbecue

January 28, 2011

The Better Half and I love barbecue. The Better Half, being from Alabama, might have barbecue sauce in his veins– and he’s quite particular. Here are, in sort of a particular order, our five favorite barbecue joints in Cincinnati (that we’ve tried). 1. SmoQ (Fairfield)– look for a review next week, but the preview is [...]

Review: Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grille, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas

January 27, 2011

(Catching up on some travel posts– a local review tomorrow!) I am generally not someone who “ooohs” and “aahs” over Food Network television programming, these days.  Despite the recent Guy Fieri furor,  I miss the days of David Rosengarten, when Emeril wasn’t a caricature, when Bobby Flay just grilled, and Rachael Ray didn’t exist.  Oh, [...]

Review: Henry’s Puffy Tacos (San Antonio)

January 27, 2011

I’m in San Antonio for a couple of days, and I decided that while I was here, I wanted to try puffy tacos. I’ll admit– I saw it on a Throwdown episode (I don’t think Bobby won), and I figured I could go for dinner on my way from the airport. So after I climbed [...]

Mt. Adams Fish House closed

January 26, 2011

The front door of the Mt. Adams Fish House has a sign: closed. It was owned by the same folks who own Apsara (now closed), the Celestial and Teak Thai (right across the street). There is a rumor that a Mexican restaurant will go in to replace it. Any insight on this, intrepid readers?

Review: Bouquet

January 26, 2011

Covington has such an abundance of adorable, quirky, unique dining experiences. As many of them have gone smoke-free, The Better Half and I are making a point to visit more of them.  One night, we noticed that Bouquet had openings for the time we wanted to eat– all the better– so we made a quick [...]

A Followup to Mangoes

January 25, 2011

Yesterday’s post was so much fun– I love hearing your stories about words and food (keep them coming!). Apparently Albert Pyle from the Mercantile Library ( one of my favorite places in town, and Pyle is also known as Dr. Know to Cincinnati Magazine readers) also discussed the etymology of mangoes in a recent issue [...]

Only in Cincinnati…

January 24, 2011

Okay, I hear this is a Midwestern thing (not just Cincinnati), but I swear I’ve only heard it here.  While tromping through Jungle Jim’s on Saturday (with a camera; apparently the Bonominis have given up and are allowing cameras inside– all the better, as it’s free promotion for them, right?) I spotted this sign: I [...]

Friday Five: Favorite Sandwiches

January 21, 2011

For our purposes here, a sandwich could also include something in a wrap instead of bread, but not a bun (as in: no hamburgers). 1. Virgil’s Pastrami sandwich (Bellevue). I haven’t written about Virgil’s yet (I went there several months ago) because I lost all of my pictures. I’ll go back sometime soon, but this [...]

Never Said About Restaurant Websites

January 20, 2011

The Hoperatives sent me this link and I’ve been giggling over it every since. In all seriousness, there are good restaurant websites– and bad ones. My personal pet peeves: PDF Menus Flash (for two reasons: there are so many bad Flash websites, and I can’t see them on my iPhone or iPad) Music As you [...]
