Cocktail Hour: Agua Fresca
It’s possible! Sometimes, in the heat of summer, the last thing you want is alcohol. You’re already hot. You’re already tired. You don’t need anything to make you hotter or more tired, so what do you drink?
I was in Phoenix recently, and while killing time, a friend suggested I hit up Pro’s Ranch Market, an Hispanic market that is sort of like Jungle Jim’s– very colorful and very unique. There were piles upon piles of bolilo, queso fresca, freshly-made chicharrones, and a station that sold horchata and different flavors of agua fresca. I was with my friend Toni, and we each got a drink to sip on while we were wandering around the store: she got agua fresca, and I went for a horchata.
Horchata is great, but a little heavy. The agua fresca was perfectly refreshing on a 110 degree day. I decided I needed to make it again, and coincidentally needed a pitcher drink for a Fox 19 segment (where I managed to get it all over myself, ha). Make some this weekend or for the 4th of July. It’s super simple.
You need fruit– I used watermelon. You could use really ripe cantaloupe, strawberries, pineapples, or a blend. Use what you like. I used a “personal” seedless watermelon which was just about perfect.
- 2 pounds of really ripe fruit, cubed
- 1¾ cup water
- Juice of 2 limes
- 2 tablespoons simple syrup (more or less to taste)
- In a blender or food processor, puree the fruit well, and then strain into a bowl, removing all solid bits. Combine with water, lime juice and simple syrup. Pour into a pitcher, add ice, and enjoy.
